Applications:
The main application of sodium chlorite is the generation of chlorine dioxide for bleaching and stripping textiles, pulp, and paper.
It is also used in municipal water treatment plants to produce drinking water by generating chlorine dioxide on-site from sodium chlorite.
It is used as a disinfectant in many food and beverage plants, in the processing of slaughterhouse waste to reduce odor, and in water treatment for disinfection and the removal of iron and manganese.
It is used as an ingredient in the production of oral rinses, toothpastes, mouth sprays and gels, and contact lens cleaning solutions.
In air conditioning and heating systems, it is used to disinfect pipes and ducts, preventing the spread of harmful bacteria.
It is also widely used in slaughterhouses, in holding areas and rooms where animals are kept before slaughter, as a disinfectant for cleaning walls, floors, and surfaces in general.
Chlorine dioxide generated from sodium chlorite has been approved by the FDA under certain conditions for disinfecting water used to wash fruits, vegetables, and poultry.
