SODIUM BENZOATE USP

Description

Sodium benzoate, also known as sodium hydroxide, is a white, crystalline, gelatinous or granular salt of benzoic acid with the formula C₆H₅COONa. It is soluble in water and slightly soluble in alcohol. The salt is an antiseptic and is commonly used as a food preservative.

Applications:

Because it is a bactericidal and fungicidal preservative, it is commonly used in carbonated drinks, fruit salads, juices, jams, jellies, caviar, margarines, candies, fruit cakes, and sauces.

Precautions:

It can cause hypersensitivity reactions, with irritation of the eyes, skin, and mucous membranes. Cases of non-immunological contact urticaria have also been reported. Because it is an eye irritant, it should not be used as a preservative in eye drops. Prolonged oral administration can cause gastric irritation. Symptoms of overdose include vomiting and irritability. Sodium benzoate can lead to kidney stones and other kidney problems. Blood gas analysis should be performed, as it can produce effects typically associated with salicylate overdose, such as hyperventilation and metabolic acidosis. Use with caution in newborns with hyperbilirubinemia.
