Description
Sodium bicarbonate, also known as sodium hydrogen carbonate, baking soda, or sodium acid carbonate, and bearing a slight resemblance to sodium carbonate, can be found as a mineral in nature around the world or can be produced artificially. Although very popular and useful, it was not widely used until the mid-1800s.

Baking soda is used in the manufacture of salts and effervescent drinks, artificial mineral waters, baking powder, as a reagent in chemical analysis, for electrolytic plating with gold and platinum, in the tanning industry, for the treatment of wool and silk, in fire extinguishers, in ceramics, for butter preservation, and for preventing wood mold.
In medicine, it is used to treat gastric hyperacidity, metabolic acidosis, and as a urinary alkalizer.
It can also be used for acid burns, as its alkaline nature neutralizes the acid. It helps heal sores.
For household cleaning, it is used for its abrasive and deodorizing properties. Rubbing it with a cloth and baking soda can also be used to clean silver.
It is widely used in natural cosmetics, both as a deodorant and as a shampoo substitute. It is also used as a foot deodorant.
