BUTYL GLYCOL

It is used as a solvent for nitrocellulose resins, sprayable lacquers, and quick-drying lacquers. It is used in the manufacture of paints and varnishes, and reduces the viscosity of alkyd resin varnishes, acting as a regulator. It is also used in the textile industry for dye printing and is applied to increase bleach resistance. Butyl glycol serves as a solvent in surface treatment and as a metal degreaser. It is used as a dispersant in oil spills. It is a powerful remover of polar and non-polar substances such as greases and oils. In the petroleum industry, it is used for its surfactant properties. Specifically, it is used to separate fluids, stabilize drilling fluids, and is added to water for well injection. It is used to emulsify oil with water. It acts as an excellent solvent in a wide variety of synthetic or nitrocellulose resins. It improves the flow of waterborne paints. It is a raw material for the production of butyl glycol acetate and an important starting material for various syntheses for the production of plasticizers by reaction with phthalic anhydride. It is also formulated in insecticides, herbicides, pesticides, and cosmetics, and is a component in hydraulic fluids and cutting and drilling oils.
